Alesha's Story

Upon enrollment, Alesha, STARS scholar from 2010-2012, had completed her GED and enrolled in cosmetology school at EQ School of Hair Design. Soon after, Alesha discovered that she was expecting her third child and first son, Lane in March 2011. STARS as well as EQ supported Alesha while she had bonding time with her newborn. Alesha had every intention to returning to school after her maternity leave but in Aug., five-month-old Lane tragically passed away from SUIDS (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Syndrome). Alesha’s biggest challenge was facing adversity head on and finding the strength to continue. A short time after Lane passing she returned to STARS, completed her program, and received her license to practice cosmetology in 2012. Alesha says, “STARS was there through the hardest time of my life and I will always be thankful for the compassion and understanding .” Alesha has been in the beauty industry for over nine years and currently has a chair at Creative Edge.

Alesha is an example of how STARS supports scholars not only monetarily but also during setbacks and assisting in overcoming adversity by being available to listen, guide and understand the struggles that non-traditional students endure beyond academics.
